HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE

Let’s say it’s 6.15p m and you’re going home (alone of course), after an unusually hard day on the job. You’re really tired, upset and frustrated.

Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to adiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately you don’t know if you’ll be able to make it that far. You have

been trained in CPR [Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) It's an emergency medical procedure for a victim of cardiac arrest or, in some circumstances, respiratory arrest. CPR is performed in hospitals, or in the community by laypersons or by emergency response professionals] , but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself.

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.

However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.

A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital. Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!!

You can become a millionaire too!

Tell me the worth of Rs 100, at 10 per cent interest, after 150 years. Is it in thousands, lakhs…? Nah! That’s Rs 16 crore! And the same amount would grow to Rs 1899 crore after 200 years. No, that is no magic, but simply the power of compounding, described as the eight wonder of the world by Albert Einstein himself. Imagine someone in your family might have left Rs 100 in a bank account 200 years ago. You would already have become a billionaire today! Simple.
Still unimpressed? Because you don’t have the patience to wait for such a long period? Then try some other ways and avenues. You may get the desired result even within 3 to 10 years, depending on the kind of investment and the risk involved.

Says Ashish Kapur, CEO, invest  Shoppe India Ltd, “We believe the best way of making money, if you were to start with an empty kitty, is to make investment regularly in a disciplined manner. And when it comes to regular investing, there is nothing to beat SIP.”

Thus, an extremely conservative person can easily look forward to an 8 per cent return compounded monthly and make a crore by investing Rs 1.37 lakh every month for five years.

If you are unable to make that kind of investment, then you can safely decrease the investment amount by increasing the period. For instance, if you save just Rs 5,000 every month and invest it in an absolutely safe instrument, which gives 8 per cent return compounded annually, you will amass over Rs 1 crore in 35 years alone.

However, if you are also willing to take risk for higher returns, then only the sky is the limit.

Says Amit Sarup, director, Religare Venture Capital Ltd, “There are various investment options which can increase the investor’s wealth multifold over a time span. At the safest end of the spectrum are relatively risk-free investments such as National Savings Certificates, fixed deposits, debt mutual funds etc. which in current scenario can give a return of approximately 8-9 per cent pa and can double your money over a period of 8 to 9 years. However, one can opt for a high risk investment and venture into equities to get a much higher return in a shorter time-frame.”

One needs to understand, however, that equity markets are very volatile and can also result in capital getting eroded in case of negative movements in equity markets. For an individual one of the best ways to invest into equities is by investing via the mutual funds route. In the past couple of years, the returns have been phenomenal with average returns being up to as high as 40 to 50 per cent per annum. However, even if one looks at the performance over much longer periods, there are many schemes which have given an annual return between 25 and 30 per cent.
Thus, if one looks at this option, one can invest Rs 50 lakh and reach a figure of Rs 1 crore within three years. If one wants to invest a smaller amount, an investment of just Rs 15 lakh can increase and reach the magic figure of Rs 1 cr within seven to eight years, going by the historical data.

Now if you were to combine the power of compounding and the power of equity, you require mere Rs 13,500 monthly to be a crorepati in 10 years at 30 per cent return. If 30 per cent sounds unrealistic, then you can settle for Rs 26,500 every month to be a crorepati in 10 years at 20 per cent annual return. And given the kind of salaries people are getting today, these sums are not that difficult to invest.

Real estate investment is the other option by way of which one can multiply the investments at a good rate of return. Like equity markets, returns over the past 2-3 years have been phenomenal with investment values doubling or even tripling during this phase. True, the realty market is currently witnessing some corrections in prices, but that is mostly happening where the prices are or were abnormally high owing to speculative activities and artificial pricing. This is in fact good for genuine buyers as it will drive speculators out of the market. Anyway, this is only a temporary phase and the real estate market should soon be back on track as property prices always rise in the long run.

Another avenue whereby one can make high returns is by taking the private equity or venture capital route. This involves investing into equity of emerging business which is normally not listed on any stock exchanges at the time of investing. However on listing, these investments can yield multibagger gains and can probably multiply an investor’s money at a very fast rate. The risk involved is also very high as the business itself carries the risk of failure. Thus one has to do an in-depth study into various factors before taking such an investment decision. Also since the deal size is large and not available publicly, it may not be possible for all investors to opt for this route.

“Other ways are trading in equity derivative, where one can take huge position by just paying small margin money. It, however, entails a huge risk as the positions taken by players are levered several times over. Commodities, art etc also provide avenues for acquiring humongous wealth provided luck favours you,” informs Kapur.

But why to bet on luck when you can rely on the power of compounding?

Musharraf eighth worst dictator in world

NEW YORK: Pakistan’s beleaguered President Pervez Musharraf has been named the eighth worst dictator in the world by the widely circulated ‘Parade’ magazine here.

Kim Jong-Il of North Korea tops the magazine’s annual World’s Worst Dictators list for ‘running the most isolated, repressive regime in the world’.

At number two is Omar Al-Bashir of Sudan. “Under Bashir’s rule, the Darfur region of Sudan continues to be the site of a violent power struggle among government forces and allied militia, rebels and bandits,” the magazine says in its latest edition.

Myanmar’s Than Shwe is considered the third worst dictator because ‘he ordered troops to fire at the pro-democracy demonstrations’ led by Buddhist monks in August and September last.

Musharraf’s rank has risen from last year’s 15th placement. Parade explained, “In recent months, Musharraf suspended Pakistan’s constitution, shut down the courts, arrested several thousand dissidents and passed a law removing challenges to his continuation as president.”

“He allowed former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto to return to Pakistan but barred Sharif from running in elections. Bhutto was assassinated, an act that some observers tie to Musharraf’s government.”

Others in the list include King Abdullah (No 4) of Saudi Arabia, the country with the ‘most oppressed women in the world’, Hu Jintao (No 5) of China who ‘controls all media and represses religion’, and Sayyid Ali Khamenei (No 7) of Iran, where ‘officials carry out public hangings’.

The ‘Parade’ magazine claims a readership of 71 million as it is distributed by more than 400 major Sunday newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, New York Post, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, The Dallas Morning News and Houston Chronicle.

The magazine was in the news for running an interview in an early January issue with former Pakistan premier Bhutto conducted before she was assassinated in late December. The magazine chose not to insert a note about her tragic end.

Pakistan lifts the ban on YouTube

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority has told internet service providers (ISPs) to restore access to the site, according to a spokeswoman.

Google, the owner of YouTube, confirmed service had been restored in Pakistan.

The attempt to block the site, reportedly because of a “blasphemous” video clip, caused a near global blackout of the site on Sunday.

A spokesman for YouTube told the BBC News website: “We are pleased to confirm that YouTube is again accessible in Pakistan.”

It is reported that a trailer for a forthcoming film by Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders, which portrays Islam in a negative light, was behind the restrictions.

The ban was instigated by Pakistan on Friday. At the time, the BBC News website’s technology editor, Darren Waters, said that to block citizens from accessing YouTube it was believed Pakistan Telecom “hijacked” the web server address of the popular video site.

Those details were then passed on to the country’s internet service providers so that anyone in Pakistan attempting to go to YouTube was instead re-directed to a different address.

But the details of the “hijack” were leaked out into the wider internet by Hong-Kong based provider PCCW and as a result YouTube was mistakenly blocked by other ISPs around the world.

The block on the servers was lifted once PCCW had been told of the issue by YouTube engineers.

A statement from Google said that the problems lasted for “about two hours”.

“Traffic to YouTube was routed according to erroneous internet protocols, and many users around the world could not access our site,” it said.

A leading net professional told BBC News: “This was probably a simple mistake by an engineer at Pakistan Telecom. There’s nothing to suggest this was malicious.”

IP hijacking involves taking over a web site’s unique address by corrupting the internet’s routing tables, which direct the flow of data around the world.

Other countries that have temporarily blocked access to YouTube include Turkey and Thailand.

SRK, Ambani, Mallya win bids for owning IPL teams

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has announced its much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) bid winners for the respective teams. GMR group has won the bid for Delhi team whereas UB group’s Vijay Mallya bagged the contract for Bangalore team. Ness Wadia takes control of Chandigarh team and Mukesh Ambani has been declared the bid winner for Mumbai team. Bollywood king, Shah Rukh Khan has been given charge for Kolkata team.

India cements hold the rights for Chennai team and Deccan Chronicle has Hyderabad. ‘Investors’ in cricket have been given rights for Jaipur team.

The following are the bid amounts and winners for various teams in the Indian Premier League:

Vijay Mallya won the bid for the Bangalore team for $111.6 million.

Shah Rukh Khan won the bid for the Kolkata team for $75.09 million.

GMR Holdings won the bid for the Delhi team for $84 million.

Mukesh Ambani won the bid for the Mumbai team for $111.9 million.

India Cements won the bid for the Chennai team for $91 million.

Deccan Chronicle won the bid for the Hyderabad team for $107.01 million.

Emerging Media won the bid for the Jaipur team for $67 million.

Ness Wadia won the bid for the Mohali team for $76 million, reportedly.

The auction includes players’ contracts and team franchisee.

According to the IPL tender document, the franchisee revenue is divided into two sections. The first is centralised revenue under which falls the title sponsorship, media right and official umpires’ sponsorships.

The second is franchisee revenue which primarily deals with team naming rights, team shirt sponsorship and ticketing revenues. Based on the calculations of the media rights, some of the bidders have reached the conclusion on Wednesday evening that earnings from the sale of different rights are not going to exceed more than $8 million (Rs 320 crore).

“It is natural for any business to break even in a couple of years. IPL is a big venture and it’s certainly going to do wonder to the world of cricket,” a top IPL official told TOI on Wednesday. If that happens, Indian cricket will surely benefit from the 10-year event on and off the field.

In the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) which starts from April 18, BCCI has decided to pay them and some other senior cricketers 10-15% more money than the highest auctioned player of the Twenty20 event.

Sources said BCCI has shortlisted five cricketers – Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh – who will be called “icon players” and will be the highest paid players in the league. They will not be auctioned if they have a city team.

IPL chairman Lalit Modi confirmed, “This is one of the BCCI suggestions and it awaits the nod of the IPL board. The player bids will take place next month.”

A top BCCI official added that regular members of the Indian team will probably make Rs 1.2 crore to Rs 2 crore from the 44-day event, with the icon players getting the highest amount.

The Future Group too made a late entry. And other bidders included DLF, Private Equity Fund and Videocon.

Indian Premier League Cricket : Billion Dollar Baby

If you thought cricket was big, wait for this. The IPL promises to be bigger than anything India has ever seen. We give the inside-out of this billion-dollar baby…

What is the Indian Premier League?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) launched the Indian Premier League (IPL) on September 14, 2007. Based on the lines of the English Premier League (EPL) and the National Basketball League (NBA), the IPL is said to be the brainchild of BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi. The idea was first floated in 1996 but was shot down as the board felt it would go against the zonal system of domestic cricket. The project moved into top gear when the Zee group launched a rival Indian Cricket League on similar lines in April 2007.

Who are the franchisees?

The franchisees will own the eight teams in the fray. They can run them in their own styles, bring their own sponsors and even name the team according to their choice. They will even be free to list their teams on the stock exchange.

How is it different from the football and hockey leagues in India?

The IPL, in a way, is not very different in its format vis-a-vis the PHL or the I-League in football. It is, however, totally different in its concept as the teams have been offered to franchisees (individuals or corporates) through a bidding process that culminated on Thursday. The BCCI has already signed up 80 international players who will also be put for auction soon.

When will the IPL matches be played and where?

Under lights, on a home and away basis, in the cities that have formed the teams. The league opens on April 18 and will see 59 matches spread over 44 days

What kind of money is involved in IPL?

The overall prize money will be US $5 million, with the winners taking home $2 million. The remaining will be up for grabs in different forms, like man of the match awards and cash prizes. By contrast, the winners of the 2007 ICC World Cup in the Caribbean took home $1 million; the Indian team that won the World Twenty20 got half of that. TV rights have already gone for over $1 billion. Franchisees have already committed close to US $723 million. Top players are expected to earn minimum 1-2 crores per season.

What is already in place for IPL?

With the league scheduled for April 2008, the IPL has so far sold the eight teams to corporate houses and signed leading players. Indian stars like Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly will be called “icon players” and can play only for their respective cities. They will be the highest paid players and will not be auctioned. The bidding will take place next month.

Who owns the IPL TV rights?

Sony Entertainment, a division of Japan’s Sony Corp, and the Asia-based World Sports Group (WSG) won the broadcast rights for ten years, worth more than a whopping US $1 billion. TV rights are worth $918 million, with $100 million set aside for promotion.
Who will run the IPL?

BCCI has formed an IPL council that comprises former BCCI president IS Bindra, vice-presidents Rajiv Shukla, Chirayu Amin, Lalit Modi and Arun Jaitley, and former cricketers Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri. While the BCCI officials are honorary members, Pataudi, Gavaskar and Shastri will be paid for their services. The IPL governing council will have a five-year term and will run, operate and manage the league independently of the BCCI.

Green Fuel Alternatives

There are several alternatives to using gasoline or diesel fuel for automobiles. Each, however, has its own list of pros and cons. While most of us realize that there are multiple reasons in favor of changing the way that we currently power our vehicles, no currently single solution to the energy problem is emerging.

We do need to change the way in which we power our economy in order to end our dependency on Middle East oil and reduce carbon emissions and pollution. While we know the goal, getting there is another issue that is much more complex and lacks the massive amount of public participation that it may take to get the job done.Even if you do not believe that people are the cause of the current problems with climate change and global warming, there are still numerous benefits to both the long-term health of the economy and the environment. In order to beat the problem before it becomes a disaster we do need to aggressively pursue alternative forms of fuel. Green fuel alternatives are out there and while none of the choices will alleviate all of the problems, if we invest more in the development of green fuel alternatives, the scope of the problem may be reduced over time.

Ethanol

Ethanol alcohol appears to be the leading choice at the moment. Megabucks are being invested in projects to develop and produce ethanol from corn and other farm products. While producing ethanol from high sugar content corn is fairly easy to do, the ethanol fuel produced from this process contains 30% less energy that gasoline, which means that when it is mixed with gasoline or used as an E85 blend (85% ethanol), a vehicle will burn more fuel than it would with gasoline. Of concern is a recent report in Scientific American magazine indicating that ethanol use may actually increase pollution. While on the surface ethanol looks like a clean alternative, in reality it may not be. Pollution is produced both in the production and the burning of ethanol fuel.

In addition to not being a very efficient fuel and possibly exacerbating the pollution problem, current pressure to produce ethanol from corn is driving the price for corn to record levels, which affects the price of beef and other products tied to the price of corn. There are other alcohol alternative, such as cellulosic ethanol, that may be more viable over the long run if ways can be found to reduce the cost of production.

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is one of George Bush’s favorite fuels of the future. The greatest benefit related to the use of hydrogen fuel is the fact that zero harmful emissions are created when it is burned (the only emission is water). However, the production process itself is costly (3 to 4 times the cost for producing an energy equivalent to gasoline) and very energy intensive. Hydrogen fuel can still be a very viable green fuel alternative if better production methods are discovered. Unfortunately, the production hurdles are so large that it may take an enormous investment to overcome the problem areas.

Biodiesel

Biodiesel has become very popular in Europe. It is cleaner burning than ethanol and easier to produce. it also offers superior fuel economies with much better gas mileage than other alternatives.

Most of the articles found in the USA press are related to using waste grease from fast food fryers, which can be filtered and used as biodiesel fuel. While this is great for small scale use, not enough waste grease is produced to make this a viable alternative. Europe has a much more practical focus on the use of soybean oil to produce biodiesel fuel. Waste grease is also recycled into biodiesel. Biodiesel can also be added to regular diesel fuel in a 20% biodiesel, 80% regular diesel blend known as B20.

So why hasn’t this idea taken off in the USA? Europe has focused on the use of diesel powered vehicles to improve fuel mileage for quite some time. Diesel-powered vehicles are much more common in Europe as a result. Biodiesel fuels will not run in gasoline engines, so in order for this alternative to become viable on a large scale, more people will need to purchase diesel powered cars and trucks. I do see biodiesel as being a very good alternative for cross-country truckers.

Electric Vehicles

The ideal non-polluting, green fuel vehicle is the electric car. That is, of course, if you can find a way to produce enough electricity to charge the batteries without producing pollution in the process. Other problems associated with electric vehicles include the short life and expense of the batteries needed to power the vehicles, and very short driving distances. If everyone decided to buy an electric vehicle, the increased demand for electricity would be enormous. Due to the way that energy is produced in this country, which is primarily with coal-fired power generators, the net effect on pollution could be worse.

On the plus side, electric vehicles may help reduce our dependency on foreign oil if the country focuses more on nuclear power as a way to produce electricity. Electric vehicles can also be designed to take advantage of the sun as a partial source for replenishing battery life.

Green Fuel Observations

There isn’t any one single solution to this energy pickle we have gotten ourselves into. The best solution is likely a blended plan which focuses on low-pollution, green fuel alternatives, such as biodiesel fuel and electric vehicles. The largest problem appears to be the lack of motivation on the part of the American public. There is currently not enough interest in everyone contributing to the solution by doing something on their part to move the country in the right direction. Everyone is looking fro someone else to solve the problem.
